Monday macchiato nosso good

Scary Mechanical Tiger

There’s a scary looking mechanical tiger in United Square at Novena that has scary bloodshot eyes and wheels on its paws. Apparently the handlers of this tiger charge $5 for a ride on it. Siao!

Then there were the staff of the Haagen Dazs cafe who said they couldn’t serve me a double shot macchiato because it wasn’t on the menu, even if a single macchiato was. Even after I explained that a double macchiato was like a double espresso, only you put a small spot of foamed milk to mark the espresso, making it a macchiato, because a macchiato in Italian means ‘spotted’. I even offered to pay 50 cents for the spot of foamed milk. But, cannot, said the waiters.

To their credit, the waiters told the cafe manager, who suggested I order a cappucino instead. I said, ‘nair mind, I’ll have a double espresso’. To his credit, the manager asked again what it was I really wanted, and I said ‘double macchiatto, which is like a double espresso, only you put a small spot of milk to mark the espresso, and I’ll pay 50 cents for the milk’.

And the manager said ‘ok’, and instructed his waiters to make me a double macchiato with no extra charge for the spot of milk.

Good job, manager of cafe! 100 points for effort. Zero for the waiters who served me a double macchiato with enough foamed milk to spot twenty espressos.

Double Macchiato
Dude, where’s my coffee?

  1. Actually if the staff were properly trained, they’d realise that all the coffee varieties differ by the number of shots used and the amount of milk and foam to add. No magic to it. 🙂

I once shattered an employee’s fantasy by telling her a cappucino is a flat white with less milk and more foam.

And yes that looked like a lousy coffee.

  3. A long time ago I was buying a foot-long sandwich in Subway (do they have that in S’pore?). I asked the girl to cut my foot-long sandwich into threes, and she replied.

“Sorry sir. I can cut it into twos and I can cut it into fours, but I cannot cut it into threes.”

  5. Kenny: hahahaha!!! they have the policy of double happiness (好事成双)!! so everything must come in pairs for good luck!!! or else, if things start going wrong and the outlet shut down, there goes her job! so cannot cut into three!! must cut into twos or fours!!!

hmmmmm i have a suggestion!! why dun you get her to cut into six??? then she adhere by the double happiness policy. if you are sharing with two other person, you do the maths yourself and still get your three pieces from a foot-long sandwich! good ar!!

  9. They must be thinking, oh this is such a nice man, I shall give him MORE foam. More More MORE!

Somehow I have the feeling they think that the machiato is the direct cousin of cappucino. (although it’s true what mooiness said: “all the coffee varieties differ by the number of shots used and the amount of milk and foam to add”)

The coffee culture in Singapore ain’t that strong, but ah well. Go to starbucks and ask the “barista” about the steam pressure of the coffee machine and watch they go “gah?” for a good time.

  11. Good lord, the number of irresponsible coffee conoisseurs out there makes me just a little bit nauseated.

P.S. I think you should have more coffee-based posts. It’s good for the soul, coffee is.
