Misreadings

“Rebecca Koh” writes on Channelnewsasia.com’s special haze page that:

The view from my office which is located at Gateway East along Beach Road was worse than yesterday or few hours earlier. But the PSI Index shows only slight difference.

Are the PSI index reported by the respective department in charge accurate?


It’d be great if someone could teach us how to assemble our own DIY PSI kit, wouldn’t it?

    Well, the PSI is an average measurement of particulate matter within singapore. Hence, there would of course be places which has a higher PSI reading or alternatively have a lower PSI reading. But if you average it then it would be that PSI reading which is reported. I think it would be kinda weird for them to report PSI reading for each constituency! Imagine PSI in Ang Mo Kio is **, PSI in Toa Payoh is **. I would then foresee people complaining that their part of Ang Mo Kio is more hazy. Then they have to report it more specifically: Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 PSI reading is **. It will never stop 🙂

    But singapore is so small you say there should not be much of a difference? Well, singapore is not that small. A good example is the difference in the amount of rainfall per annum say in Clementi and Pasir Ris.The difference could be large.

    Hey darenotsay, thanks for enlightening. That makes a lot of sense to me as I was baffled by the PSI reading at 80 mark which prima facie, the fading sky scrapers at Shenton is showing a much worst PSI reading. So I’m just wondering how can that be. Anyhoo, it’s looking like this haze is gonna be with us for awhile and the entire Shenton now is looking like “The Day After”. aahaha

    Seriously, after all these years, I strongly believe that our neighbours will never change. The farmers’ working methods will not change. Why? The government’s not helping them to change. It all boils down to one simple point – leaders make or break their charges. But I do hope that I can be proven wrong by our friends there. Keep my fingers crossed.

    It is not Misreadings. The reason for the sky and building to look hazy is not only haze. It can be also be due to the temperature. A sudden change of the temperature can cause the sky to look hazy. Weather on different days but with same psi may look different.

    cool. darenotsay indeed enlightens me. (: i find the haze pretty cool actually, never seen shenton way like this before. the PSI brings a certain amount of anticipation and excitement everyday. i love how they constantly update it on the channel 5 screen. (:

    Oh well, perhaps this haze will be with us for the rest of decades and hmm…that’s genuinely err…uniquely Singapore. Like other countries, they have winters and the seasons whereas, Lion City, whoa with a season for haze! Instead of winter shopping for fur coats and ski and all that, there’ll be gas-mask in trendy, flamboyant design catered for all walks of life, creeds and ages…whoahoho!

    The PSI we get is a rolling average, I thinks it’s over a 3 hour period. The advantage is that the published number will then not ‘jump’ around like the stock market. And, as with moving averages, there is a time lag.

    The PSI index is just numbers. Why bother?

    Look out the windows yourself. If it look hazy, then reduce outdoor activities. If you have difficulties breathing, then stay indoors.

    Why bother so much about the number on the top left hand corner of your TV screen?
