Coming home and eating out

Night and day’s all screwy thanks to the mother of all jet lags which I’m finding difficult to shake off even though I told myself that by not thinking about it, I wouldn’t be affected by it that badly.

Other than that, re-accustomising oneself to home’s pretty easy though – just head out and get some fabulous local food, which I tried at Newton, only to find that it had been completely and outlandishly refurbished to the point of wah-lao-ness. This was compounded by the lack of smokers’ seating which meant that there were no smokes-and-teh-tarik to be had without anyone staring at you as if you were a leper.

But there’s a comfort in spotting banners and signs that are Singaporean because of the love of the word ‘cum‘:

Annual cleaning cum
Here in our fair country, we always clean up after ourselves

But of course, the only way to really feel that you’re back home in Singapore is to head to that Australian part of the island, otherwise known as Tanglin Mall, and experience the life-sized facsimile of Lygon Street known as Cafe Beviamo. There, I had scrambled eggs, spinach, eggplant and vegemite with the best ciabatta available anywhere I swear.

The not-so-consummate blogger only takes a photo of his food halfway through his meal

Then, because I had been missing home so much the last two weeks, the cafe’s sticky date pudding beckoned me. And I said ok, also can.

First you play Jenga with it, then you eat it

Wow, Newton looks totally transformed! I’ll be staying across the road in November and will have to check it out. Maybe the Lygon St reproduction too. But will be definitely avoiding any place enticing me to cum in (and people think Australians are crude! – which they are of course).
