Bloggers take their turn as judges of the Miss Singapore Universe contest
THE “authors’ note” on Singapore Beauty (singaporebeauty.com) states that the blog is a collection of ugly happenings in Singapore, because “Singapore is not only beautiful, it is ugly at the same time”.
I am not sure if that explains why the recent Miss Singapore Universe 2006 pageant was covered on the blog. The post announced the winner, Carol Cheong, and then immediately after, commented that the contestants “seems [sic] to have no brains” because “most of them didn’t even know how to answer the questions. They never really answer the questions!”

There were accusations and remarks about the pageant being meaningless, with the eventual winner almost a shoo-in for the title. Or as blogger “Moomooman” (cowdunk.blogspot.com) remarked: “It was a toss up between Carol Cheong or Jade Seah. The others were just to make up the numbers.”
Blogger “ecneret” (giamcaicharoti.blogspot.com) claimed he knows a few people more deserving of the crown. Still, there were many reasons to watch the live telecast of the pageant on Sunday.
Blogger “elizabeth” (birddroppingsonymw.blogspot.com) felt compelled to watch it every year “mainly to see how smart/stupid the contestants are and to be mean and comment about how fat/skinny they are.”
She added: “I was especially interested in THE A*STAR SCHOLAR. since she talks so much about her being a scholar (and an A*Star one!), I was really really really interested to find out how smart she really is.”
With some local media talking up the brain factor of this year’s pageant, all eyes were on the tertiary qualifications of the contestants. Or were they?
Moomooman lamented: “On the very year the organiser declared the cohort as the most brainiest, they give the title to the girl with the biggest CUP in Miss Singapore Universe History.” Blogger “lynn_delysa” (lynn-delysa.blogspot.com) agreed with that observation: “When I saw the winner for Miss body beautiful, (who is also the overall winner), I thought, ‘Woah … no wonder she gets that title …’ I think those who watched the show know what I mean … Her assets … quite outstanding lah!”.
Blogger “Scizorsim” (scizorsim.blogspot.com) was generally disappointed with the hype surrounding the academic achievements of the contestants.
“Uni grads? Just look at how fluent they talked, how fake they tried to accent their statements. Maybe only a few, like my favourite Jade Seah (my future school mate) were at least reasonably good looking enough and had the natural ability to talk.”
Probably one of the best commentaries on the pageant can be found at blogger Merv Kwok’s site, (mervkwok.blogspot.com), where he’s listed and commented on some of the contestants’ responses in the Q&A segment of the pageant.
On contestant Yifeng’s definition on beauty as being about “embracing yourself and accepting whatever you are born with”, Merv retorted: “Of course, a cynic or two may argue that she’s only saying that because of her boyish hairstyle and also maybe because she looks like she has the smallest cup size of the lot.”
But there were people who liked the show, with blogger “Pink Drama Queen” (pinkdramaqueen86.blogspot.com) declaring this year’s event as “one of the best I have ever seen so far compared to previous years where the girls were snubbed either because of the way they speak or their looks”.
“Bakk” (bakk.blogspot.com) agreed, saying: “At least this year pageant was much MORE better than last year’s pageant” — but I suspect he’s talking about the winner’s “assets”.
What does winning this pageant mean for the contestants? I couldn’t find any blog talking about Carol Cheong’s chances on the world stage other than Neek’s (cynicscentral.blogspot.com) pessimistic conclusion: “You’d think we’re on to something, then she’d go to the Miss Universe pageant and stand next to Miss Venezuela. Game over.”
