The 21st of this month will see the 40th anniversary of the horrific fire that destroyed Robinsons Departmental Store at Raffles Place in 1972. Nine people died in the blaze that morning, which was large enough to be visible from Jurong.
Those who are old enough to remember the event have had memories of this seared in their minds. My mother (I was only three then) always told us about how she had changed her mind at the very last minute that morning not to shop there – her office was almost right next door at D’Almeida Street – for our Christmas presents that year.
If you or your friends have recollections of events like this – here’s a reminder to come and share next Saturday, 10 Nov 2012 at Chye Seng Huat Hardware Coffee Shop on Tyrwhitt Road. I’ll be there drinking too much coffee and talking very quickly, as will Dr Leslie Tay of ieatishootipost.sg.
Leslie has a goodie for you: submit your favourite memory of a dish your grandmother makes/used to make to grandmotherstory@gmail.com and stand a chance to win his latest book: “The End Of Char Kuay Teow” before it hits the bookstores!
Do check out iremembersg’s FB page for slices of nostalgia too.
