Sometimes, it’s quite hard to help the needy. There’s this initiative by the Southeast CDC (Community Development Council) whose instructions on the little squares of paper read:
“For every folded crane, a bowl of rice will be donated to the needy by our sponsor.
Instructions: Please fold this [piece of] paper into a crane and drop it [into some container presumably, because I don’t think they mean for you to litter…] at any Community Centres/ Clubs in [the] South East District.
This small contribution of yours is a powerful act of giving to the community.”
These squares of paper were at a cafe in Katong, and there was also a poster on the wall with illustrated instructions on how to make a paper crane. Unfortunately, all it got me were a couple of useless folded dunnowhats, and I gave up soon after that. The needy being a couple of bowls of rice short from my efforts.
Good thing for Google and the internet! ‘Cos I found this site that made me feel not so useless as I managed to fold, after half an hour of creasing and uncreasing the square of paper, an origami crane. Voila! Now to find a Community Centre / Club in the South East District. More rice for the needy!

Well done. Give yourself a well deserved pat on the back.

Why don’t you just buy the needy a bag of rice instead of folding paper cranes?

Damn! Didn’t think of that! What a complete waste of time, this paper crane folding!

Hi!
I have also read about this project cos i staying in that area. I think its a good project and schools in the area are also participating.
But like very waste paper hor.. Why not just ask people to donate the rice rather than having to chop down more trees? I believe the money saved on the paper could be used for something more important?.

I don’t know how to fold paper crane cuz they didn’t teach me origami at school. I wonder if they accept paper boat, instead… Oh heck, I’ll buy a bag of rice, at least I wouldn’t need to fold my paper dollar note.

Weird. Fold birds. Get money. Give money. Now that’d sound really funny in Hokkien.
Le Ai Wah Eh Jiao Mai?

While I agree with “hihi” about the paper wastage and that people should take the initiative to donate food and rice, it’s refreshing to see that PR companies are gently twisting people’s arms into doing something good.
This episode of altruism was brought to you by the letters F, U and N!!!
